There are almost as many media options available as there are species of orchids. It has been said that orchids can be grown in virtually any media, and in fact, professional growers use such varying materials as bark, peat moss, sphagnum moss, rockwool, lava rock, crushed tires and even bottle caps! If you find a media that works for you, stick with it. If you are unsure, you may want to start out with a media that is appropriate for most orchids and is forgiving of watering errors. Choosing a media that is appropriate for your watering habits is key. Orchids potted in rock, straight bark or sphagnum moss can dry out quickly (note, some people suffer unpleasant skin reactions to sphagnum so you might want to wear rubber gloves if using this media). Orchids potted in straight peat moss can lay too wet if you are not careful. Grower Ron has developed a custom blend of western fir bark (this type of bark takes much longer to break down), peat moss and perlite (a rocklike substance to improve drainage) that he has found effective with most varieties of orchids. Due to much demand, Worldwide Orchids is now making this potting mix (the same that is used in the greenhouse) available to the public for the first time. This media provides a middle ground between those varieties that dry out too quickly and those that hold too much water, thus providing the plant with its water and nutrition needs while reducing disease and rot problems. |
