Orchid plants can come in a variety of pots such as plastic, clay and ceramic. When choosing a pot, the number one consideration should always be drainage. No matter how attractive the pot is, if it does not provide for adequate drainage, your orchid will most likely suffer from root rot and perish. There is nothing wrong with displaying an orchid in a decorative container that does not provide for drainage as long as the orchid is potted in an appropriate pot and then slipped into the decorative one. This way, the plant can be removed for watering, allowed to drain, and then replaced. Remember to adjust your watering to match the type of pot you are using. A clay pot will dry out faster than a plastic one. Therefore, you may need to water an orchids in a clay pot more frequently. Additionally, because clay pots dry out more quickly and are made of porous materials, they tend to retain salts more than plastic pots. If using clay, you should be sure to flush out your orchid with plain water at least once a month to wash out the salt build up left by fertilizers so as to avoid root burn. Grower Ron plants all of his orchids in plastic pots with recessed drain holes. These pots provide for the best possible drainage, and are more forgiving of watering mistakes. |
