Cymbidiums are semi-terrestrial plants, This means they should be kept moist-Do NOT allow the media to either maintain saturation or dry out. A good way to judge when it is time to rewater is when the top of the potting mix fools dry to the touch. Another test is to note the weight of the plant after watering and again before rewatering. The plant and pot will weigh less as the media dries out. Run water through from the top, allowing enough to flow so as to flush out undissolved minerals from the potting mix. Water should form a pool at the top of the plant. Let the plant drip dry through drain holes in the bottom of the pot. Place on a saucer if needed. Remember to thoroughly wet the media when watering-you cannot hurt the plant by allowing to much water to enter and drain through the potting mix. Cymbidiums' water needs' vary during different stages of growth. The growth period occurs after flowering, usually during spring to early summer. During this time, your plant needs more water and fertilizer than usual so as to support new development. Follow a schedule of fertilizing for three waterings in a row and using plain water every fourth watering. In mid August, change the fertilizer to a bloom booster, such as 10-30-20. During this period, fertilizer should be applied every other watering. Follow the directions on the label. When flower buds appear, reduce the frequency of fertilization to once per month. |
