The ideal temperatures for Cymbidiums varies according to the plant's stage of development. Cymbidiums usually bloom from February to April. When blooming begins, regulate temperatures to range from 60-75' F at night and 75-95' F during the day. These ranges can be maintained through July. Beginning in August, temperatures should be lowered to initiate flower spikes. Ideal ranges for spike growth are 50-60 F. at night and 75-85' F. during the day. A low night temperature is critical from August through October. Spikes are usually established by October. During October and November, temperatures should range from 45-60 F. at night and from 60-75 F. during the day. Temperatures above 90'F. after spiking will "blast" or ruin the spikes. We advise against ever allowing temperatures to drop below 40' F. While a light frost will not terminate the plant, it will affect the development of spikes and flowers. The best humidity levels for Cymbidiums also vary with the plant's stage of development. During the growing and spiking stages, April to August, humidity levels should range from a low of 50% to a high of 80%. During blooming, February to April, humidity levels should be lowered to a range of 40- 60% so as to reduce the possibility of fungal problems on flowers. Good air movement and sufficient space between plants is essential. Overcrowding and lack of air movement can result in serious fungal and pest problems. |
