Light

Light should be adjusted to provide 25-30% sun. If you have a light meter, it should read from 2,000 to 3,000 F.C. (foot candles). If a meter is unavailable, you can judge the amount of light by touching the leaves to see how warm they feel. Slightly warm is just right; if the leaves feel hot, the plant is getting too much light and should be moved to a shadier location. Over time, leaf color is a good indication of whether or not the plant is receiving the proper amount of light. Leaves should be a light to medium green for the plant to bloom.

Cattleyas are photosensitive, meaning their blooming cycle is affected by their exposure to light. Under natural conditions, fall-blooming varieties can be expected to bloom when the days are short. Spring bloomers will flower when the days are long. To simulate the Cattleyas natural environment, keep your plant in a dark place when it is dark outside. Keeping your plant near a light after sunset will disturb its blooming cycle.
